By Mariela Santos Feb 25 Gloria Chao, the author of American Panda , started reading and writing young adult books during an unhappy stint in dental school. She eventually left dentistry behind to write full-time, but it was three years before she signed with an agent and got a book deal. Her story isn't unusual: Rejection is common in the books world, and authors of color, who are particularly underrepresented in publishing, often have a harder time breaking into the industry than white authors. I think publishing has made some great strides recently but there is still much work to do. Agents typically receive thousands of queries a year, but they can only reach out to a small percentage of writers to see their pages or offer representation.
