Yu Cheng-yao From the press release: In this exhibition the works of twenty Chinese artists will be presented. Thirteen of the artists are still alive, inlcuding three in mainland China. Six of the artists live in Formosa. The exhibition is limited to the midth century and to ink and brush painting. Many of the works have never been exhibited anywhere in the United States.

Their work is broadly a response to the dominant government driven form of propaganda-laden art known as Socialist Realism. While studying art at Minzu University of China  the 85 New Wave Movement   emerged, which also had a profound impact on his work. The message, to boys from the provinces like Guo Jian, was that beautiful girls love a man in uniform. Under capitalism or communism, sex sells. What first appears as humour is a lament at the use of sex to seduce men to war.
What differences have you observed between the first generation of contemporary artists and the current generation? The beginnings of the avant-garde in China were marked at the end of the 20th century by a number of successive movements taking a revolutionary stance in opposition to official art. Unlike the 20th-century avant-garde movements in the West, this generation did not proclaim a break from the previous one.
